Final 48 Hours (Withour Kansas and 'Cuse)

Within 48 hours we will know the brackets for the NCAA Tournament and Amanda will be watching 15 experts, sitting in a semi circle on high chairs, breaking everything down, and our pool will be complete.  However, the fun will just be starting for some of us as we prepare for Mon Ami, Lagasse, O'Sheas, Napoleon's, Joe's, and Mr. Monopoly!

As expected, Thursday and Friday destroyed us, but we are still set up for a great finish, we really do have 10 people that have a shot to win.  Below are some highlights to be aware of.
  • The highest possible score anyone can achieve is 23 points (John still has a 50% accuracy rate which is incredible for this type of pool with the upsets that have happened)
  • Amazingly, no one is eliminated officially, but Ron is 1 loss away from being eliminated
  • The standings will have some minor changes as we have some games ending after midnight, but it shouldn't have a major impact unless we see a major upset
  • Jenn - Cal State Fullerton?  For Real?  If you lose by 1 in the pool, you should cancel your flight to Vegas
  • The Great West sucks, I think we don't acknowledge them in 2013
  • Although Young is in 6th, he is in the top 20% in point remaining and can move in to first before anyone notices, he has one of the better shots to win it all

For anyone closely following the conference tournaments, you will notice upsets almost across the board.  Teams such as Kansas, Temple, Syracuse, and Southern Miss have been knocked out, this means a lot of bubbles burst for teams today.

I will e-mail out the standings over the next few days as the conditional formatting still does not work well when I post the excel file through the blog.

Half Way Point!

We are just under the half way point of  the conference tournament pool, with 14 out of the 31 automatic bids complete, and it looks like we are going to have a 10 person race at this point.

8 of the 10 have a accuracy percentage at or above 50% which is amazing, let's see if that can be maintained for the second half.

Jenn has fallen a bit due to LIU winning and Weber State losing tonight, I hope she sticks to only betting and parlaying first half lines in Vegas next week with the way her teams crumble in the second half.  Shuftan, who made his picks in 26 seconds, is all alone in first place with wins, but he has 3 opponents right behind him with a better accuracy percentage!

Complete Standings

Two major conferences have tipped off, Big East and Big 12, so we will start to see some really good games with major teams over the next few days.

The following teams were welcomed to the dance today:
  • LIU Brooklyn (Northeast)
  • Lehigh (Patriot)
  • Montana (Big Sky)

Thursday and Friday brings us 0 conference champions so we will see the remaining 17 conferences send teams to the dance on Saturday and Sunday. We will all rack up a ton of losses over the next few days, especially tomorrow as we see 43 games, but the standings could majorly change over the weekend.  No lead is safe and it is too tight in the standings to mathematically rule anyone out.

4 More Teams Punch Tickets and Illinois Directional Schools Keep Rolling

The following 4 teams won their conference tonight:
  • VCU in a close game (Colonial)
  • Loyola MD (MAC)
  • Davidson in one of the most amazing comeback double OT wins ever (Southern)
  • Saint Mary's in a Overtime Thriller (WCC)

We also saw a few significant upsets today as 4-24 Northern Illinois advanced to the quarter finals and Western Illinois knocked off top seed Oral Roberts.  Honestly, I shouldn't ever trust Golden Eagles that wear tight blue tank tops.

We are seeing movement in the standings daily and I have watched people go from 14th to 3rd, then back down to 11th, and remember the key number at this point is loses.  As your teams get knocked out in the early round,s that total starts to add up, and eventually you get to the point of not being able to recover.

Everyone's pick combinations are so different, do not get discourage as others win, only focus on your wins.  To give you an idea of what it took to win last year, Tina won with 13 points, which was a accuracy rate of 41.9%

Jenn and Shuftan are tied for 1st place, but Tim has the better winning percentage, overall this race is extremely close and just keeps going back and forth.

MVC Champion and Sunday Update

A 4th team joined the dance this afternoon, from the Missouri Valley Conference, Creighton!

Today gave us some amazing mid major games that included some chalk wins and major upsets across 5 different conferences.
  • In the CAA we saw George Mason and Old Dominion lose and most of us are alive for the VCU/Drexel championship game tomorrow
  • The biggest upset of the day came when Fairmont defeated Iona, 14 out of 17 of us had Iona as the MAAC champion;  Fairfield or Loyola (MD) will be the MAAC champion tomorrow, this is what makes these tournamanets great!
    • On a side note, Tina (who changed her name to Christina to be higher in the standings when ties are sorted by name) has started a movement to rename the MAAC
  • The other gigantic upset today was a garbage Arkansas State team taking down MTSU in the Sunbelt;  By tomorrow morning we have the potential to have all lost our Sunbelt champion
  • In the Northeast Conference, Wagner was knocked off while LIU barley hung on to the win;  Wednesday should be a great championship game between LIU and Robert Morris
  • We had a few other players lose a team here and there, but the only other big news is Stony Brook and Vermont will square off in the American East championship later in the week
    • Hartford took Vermont into a double OT game, I really hope some of you got to watch some of that, it was just awesome!
Google Docs does a poor job of allowing you to see frozen columns and conditional formating in the standings spreadsheet, so I will send a copy out a few times over the next week now that we have movement.  It still does a servicable job so I will continue to inlcude the link.

Big South

VMI brought everything they could, including the sailors, but UNC Asheville just blew them out in the second half.  This game made me really excited about going to Vegas in 11 days.

Congratulations to UNC Asheville for being the first of 68 teams to punch a ticket to the big dance!

To answer a very important VMI related question, "Keydets" and Cadets are the same thing. The VMI version pays homage to the school's southern heritage by spelling the word the way it is pronounced by a person with a thick southern drawl.

I was creeped out during the post game conference and I assume if you saw it you would be too, well, I will let you look at the picture below and find the creep.

OVC

The final result is what 15 out of 17 of us expected, Murray State was the second team to joining the Big Dance!

This was a really close game and Tennessee State had a chance to tie or win the game with the final shot.  No one called Tennessee State as the champion in our pool and it would have really impacted the NCAA tournament by potentially knocking out a bubble team.

Missouri Valley

Although this conference was only in the semi-finals, we saw a major upset that knocked out the majority of us.  9-9 Illinois State knocked off nationally ranked Wichita State by 1 point!  This is a huge upset and it opens the door for a team to sneak into the NCAA tournament and knock out a bubble team.  Wichita State had the ball with 1.1 seconds to go and could have won with a 2 point jumper, but it came up just short.

Atlantic Sun

Florida Gulf Coast lead by 13 as halftime approached, but Belmont came back strong in the second half and whooped FGCU to claim the 3rd spot in the NCAA tournament

Creep Theme Continued  during the Butler/Valpo Game...

Below is the rest of the action you should be aware of from 13 hours of games today:

  • Butler, Cleveland State and Milwaukee were blown out of the Horizon League and that leaves a Valpo/Detroit Championship game
  • Unless I point this out, you may not realize that Oral Roberts survived IPFW and we almost had a huge upset in the Summit League
  • George Mason literally has a pimp as band leader
  • Although close, St. Mary's had the game in control in the second half and advanced to the WCC finals
  • This blog is updated with 1 major game left, Gonzaga/BYU, and this game has major impacts on our pool

If you have not noticed, St. Mary's has a teen wolf on the team, how is that even fair?

With multiple team named "Gael" I wanted to ensure everyone knew what a Gael is.

Current definitions
  • Gaels – the ethno-linguistic group.
  • Gaelic – of or relating to the Gaels.
  • Goidels – an alternative term sometimes used to describe the Gaels in antiquarian contexts
  • Goidelic – of or relating to the Gaels, particularly their language, in antiquarian contexts

Over Half the League Now Has a Loss!

10 out of the 17 of us now have a loss, which is over half of the league, but we have the following players still without a loss.  I have worked with Sean Peyton and placed a bounty on every team that still has not lost.

Atlantic Sun

Now that USC Upstate is out of the tournament, the only focus of this conference is Belmont, who easily handled Eastern Tennessee State today.

The Atlantic Sun tournament will be complete tomorrow and start to generate some winners in the pool.

Horizon

Butler completely dominated Milwaukee today and they have looked good over the past 2 weeks, needing to win the Horizon Championship to play in the Big Dance.

We have 2 players in the pool who chose Milwaukee as the Horizon league champion, that is now dead!

OVC

Murray State continues to look dominant against other Mid Major teams and should be in line for a very easy OVC title win tomorrow.

15 out of the 17 players have Murray Stats as the champion so it won't be too much cause for celebration.  I will still be watching every minute rooting for Isaiah Canon and Coffee Black!

Southern Conference

The Southern Conference tipped off today with 4 seed Charleston losing to Appalachian State, causing 2 loses in the pool!

Other conference that have tipped off or in the middle of championship play include:
  • Atlantic 10
  • Colonial Conference
  • MAAC
  • Missouri Valley
  • WAC
  • West Coast Conference

Remember, in addition to the continuation of tournaments and new one's tipping off, the following conferences will have champions declared on Saturday, 3/3: Atlantic Sun, Big South, and The Murray State conference.
